Religious Service
I went to the Jiming Temple with my father in the morning of 29th April. Jiming Temple is one of the oldest Buddhism Temple in Nanjing , and I have been there many times before.
Jiming Temple was founded in the first year of Yongkang of Eastern Jin Dynasty, 300 A.D., which was 1709 years ago, it had received restoration many times among these years.
My father preferred to go to Jiming Temple very early in the morning because of the silence and peaceful there at that time. Nobody talking in the temple except of birds singing. You could stand in the temple very quiet, and talk to Buddha from heart.
Jiming Temple connects with the Taicheng, Xuanwu lake and Jiuhua Mountain. I chose Jiming Temple because my father had believed Buddhism for 20 years and it’s very near my home.
I found it interesting still though I went there every few months. Every time when I saw those serious Buddha, I felt peaceful and I could calm down. As a student who learn science at school, I know there is no real Buddha in the world, but we can still believe it, believe Buddhism. We can let them live in our heart, and talk to them every day, every night. We could purity your soul because of it, that’s amazing, and that’s also the power which a religion can give us.
I like this kind of feeling, I will go to Jiming Temple with my father again.

Act in a Performance

I acted on 31st December, 2008, in GCA Christmas celebration which was an indelible performance to over 400 students and teachers in GCA assembly hall.
I played a piece of music called “Racing horse” with my erhu. Erhu is one of the most famous Chinese traditional musical instruments in the world, which is also called “Chinese Violin”. The “Racing horse” is a piece of euphonious music which describes a horse racing.
I was very confident before the performance, because I was excellent at this piece of music and I love my erhu so much, I wanted everybody to love this instrument by my performance. However, when I stood on the stage and saw so many audience in front of me waiting for me to start, I felt extremely nervous. I started the first note very directly, but after a few notes, I felt much better and found the feeling which I should have when I play this piece of music. I calmed down and started to play it with my heart. I got a big success and I received a lot of text messages from my friends to say congratulations to me.
I felt very happy after the performance in front of all the GCA students and teachers. It was not my first time to act in a performance, but it was the first time I showed myself in GCA, I hope everybody could love my instrument, actually I did.
I enjoyed the time when I did the performance, I hope I could have other chances to show myself in front of everybody.

Go to a performance

I went to two performance this year in GCA. One of them was The Taming of the Shrew performed by the Underground Drama Society, another was GCA Fashion Show.
On the evening of December 19th, the GCA Underground Drama Society gave us an indelible performance in GCA assembly hall. I had never seen The Taming of the shrew before. It is a ridiculous but funny story between Katharina, who is an intelligent, but grumpy Shrew and a man, Petruchro, who tames her. Katharina’s pretty sister Biance who is chased by numerous suitors is another sparking role in this play. Dramatically, the whole story is a drunkard’s dream.
Cherry from 12-C and Fan from 11-E were selected as the leading actress and actor, they did a great job and all of us enjoyed their passionate acting.
I went to the performance with my classmates and I sat beside Susan. I chose this performance because it was my first time to see GCA Underground Drama Society to show the Shakespeare’s play. I like it and I was waiting with patience for another enjoyable drama next year!
I also went to the GCA Fashion show on the evening of April 27th. All the models showed the clothes which designed by themselves and their group members. I went there with my friends at six o’clock and we all enjoyed the Fashion Show. I really like some designs of the Party Clothes, they were fantastic!

Leadership Club

I joined the Leadership Club this year and I love leadership. The theme this year is “cooperation and competition”.
Leadership did two main events this year.
The first thing we did is we finished a real case study from Harvard and Western Ontario University. We did the final presentation in Sheraton Hotel on 21st March. All of us wore suits and did the 10 minutes speech in groups. Our group topic was KFC in China, why China was a great place to invest in 1980s. We prepared a long time and practised a lot before the final presentation. We searched on the Internet to learn the history, policies in China in 1980s. Canadian officially recognized P.R.China in 1973. China is getting attention from the world under successful foreign policies. In 1979, China started to reform their new economy, a group of people are becoming rich. China under suited economy policy with great number of cheap labor. We searched a lot and discussed with our group members many times. Finally we got a big success though all of us were very nervous during the presentation. It was the first time I wore suits to do this kind of formal speech in Sheraton Hotel. I learn a lot about China and KFC history, and I know more about how to be a good speaker in a speech as well. Good use of eye contact, body language, speaking rate, speaking volume are all very important points for a speaker.
The second event we did this year was to visit our sister school Jiaxing GCA for three days, from 10th to 12nd April. We went to tongxiang, Jiaxing with Mr.Gallinelli, Mr.Saxby, Ms.Chu and Mr.Ma. We played many games, made new friends, and learned how to be a good leader. Student-teachers did a lot of job this year, we all had a great time in Tongxiang, all of us enjoyed the weekend.
Mr. Gallinelli gave us a class about leadership during that weekend as well. We learned the Leadership Theory – Forming-Storming-Norming-Performing model. These 4 phases are all necessary and inevitable in order for the team to grow, to face up to challenges, to tackle problems, to find solutions, to plan work, and to deliver results.
As a good leader of a great team, we need to set goals and plans, encourage communication among members, be positive, solve problems and make decisions on a timely basis, have good meeting and give each person a job and responsibility.
There are 8 ways which Mr.Gallinelli concludes for us (actually Dale Carnegie) to influence people, they are very useful to me and I like them all:
1). The only way to win an arguments is to avoid it.
2). Show respect for the other person’s opinion – Never say “Your Wrong!”
3). If you are wrong admit it quickly.
4). Begin in a friendly way.
5). Let the other person do most of the talking.
6). Let the other person feel the idea is theirs.
7). Try honestly to see things from the other person’s point of view.
8). If nothing else works, throw down a challenge.
GCA Leadership is a really good club, I learned many things I couldn't learn from a text book. I have many “First time” in Leadership, I love Leadership!

Volunteer Work
I did different kinds of volunteer work this year, I like them all.
I did volunteer work for Mr.Alex Zheng who works in Jiangsu Province Working Association for Foreign Experts. Alex gave me a giant Excel project to do. The project needed all the details of famous universities in China for foreigners. There were 751 different Chinese Universities in the Excel, and I needed to search some information about each university. I usually searched on baidu and google to find the English names, the exact addresses, the post codes, the university websites, the International Cooperation Agency Website, the External regulatory agencies and address, the Management of foreign students and address of those universities.
I worked on this project during the Spring Festival Holiday. I did not finish all of them, but I still did a great job and I was very proud of myself to be like this patient to find all these information for each university.
The first time I did this job very slow. I spent almost half an hour to do the first university. But then, things became better, I knew where to find those information and I did the project more effectively. I think this kind of volunteer work will be very useful when I need to search all the information about Canadian Universities by myself in Grade 12, and I know how to compare each university to choose the best one I really like.
I also did translation work for Mr.Harris when we had the parents-teachers meeting this term. Peter and I helped Mr.Harris to do the PowerPoint for the meeting as well. Mr.Harris is our PE teacher, he wants all the parents know what is Grade 10 PE and what did we do during this year. We put many photos on the PowerPoint to show parents what we did and what we were going to do.
It was my first time to do translation work in front of all the parents. Peter and I cooperated very well. Most of the parents couldn't understand all the English, so translators were very important to this parents-teachers meeting. I think I did a great job and Mr.Harris was very satisfied to Peter and me. However, if I do translation the next time, I can do better for sure. I notice that my translation sometimes is too directly this time, so some Chinese sentences sound a little bit strange though parents could still understand them.
I worked for Ms.Bartell to do some little staff as well. I was happy to help teachers enter all the students’ marks into computer as a volunteer, but after I did this volunteer work, I was always thinking that if I really want to be a teacher in the future. As a teacher, you have to do all these staff by yourself, sometimes it’s going to be crazy.
I really enjoy the time when I did volunteer work. I learn new skills and I know more about different kinds of jobs.
I will do more volunteer work next year.

Nanjing Art Museum
I went to Nanjing Art Museum with my friends on 29th Feb. There was an exhibition of photography and painting about an India island Bali by an artist called Zhang Wenxi. All the photographs and paintings described the views, life styles and people on the Bali island. The exhibition was for free, so we did not have any tickets and we did not find any brochures as well.
Nanjing Art Museum was on No.12 Fourth Alley, we went there at 10 o’clock in the morning. We chose this exhibition because we were all wondering how were the views in India. 82% of people in Bali island still live in the countryside and they still do traditional farming. There were so many photographs and drawings in the exhibition and they were pretty beautiful. I felt I was on the island when I saw those photos. My favourite artwork was a painting which described different characters, different kinds of people who had different jobs were wearing different clothes, doing different things and wearing different styles of smiles. All the characters were vivid on the painting and I loved them so much. There were young woman with her baby, shopkeepers who were selling sweets, women who with bowls on their heads and so on.
I like the exhibition very much because I enjoyed the views, lifestyles in India and Bali inland was a really beautiful place to go. There were many people there but it was also very quiet. I love both the exhibition and the environment in the Nanjing Art Museum.
